I too was a little underwhelmed by the new album! I've gotten a lot of listening out of "End of Summer," but I agree with you the album is too centered on drum loops.
There’s no song that’s good for me from beginning to end. End of Summer and Piece of Heaven I mostly like, but even they’ve got parts that really don’t do it for me. Definitely my least favorite album yet, but it’s far from horrible.
While "Deadbeat" isn't as compelling or wondrous as Tame Impala's previous albums - seriously, how could anything compare with the brilliance of "Currents", which blew me away at first listen - it's still a pretty decent record. But I agree with you that after hearing "Deadbeat" all the way through the first time (though I'd already heard "Loser" and "Dracula"), I was left feeling a bit underwhelmed for many of the reasons you mention. It's growing on me though.
I’m hoping it grows on me overtime too. It’s true that Currents left a really high bar to top. I think I might prefer Innerspeaker and Lonerism a bit though! It’s no easy choice between those first few albums.

Nice to know you’re another Tame Impala fan!
