I don't like to admit it, but I love zombie stuff. I think it's because the first scary movie I remember is Night of the Living Dead. I was young, like ten or so, I think.
You nailed it on Walking Dead. Great for the first few years. Then they ran out of storylines. Neegan sort of woke it up for a bit, but he was a little too vicious for my tastes and I could have done without the execution episode.
I never played the game, so I'm very curious how the game lines up with the Last of Us series. It's an amazing show.

I didn't care for episode 2 of this second season. It was done very well, extremely well, in fact, and even though Walking Dead hardened me to some degree on losing people I like, that felt a little extreme to me, lol.
The Cordyceps does seem believable. I think I've had one on my big toe for about 20 years.
It’s so interesting seeing a whole new mass of people experience that loss for the first time. I saw it coming from a mile away and it was still hard to watch.
In my podcast yesterday with Eric and Walter I was lamenting how so much great TV these days gets walled off behind some pretty brutal violence. I thought the episode was incredibly well done, but that twist is hardly for the faint of heart. There’s no denying that.
Zombies don't appeal to me. I get my fill of dead people when I go to a wake. The longer you live, the more wakes you end up going to, which is enough already.
I totally hear that 😂😂 for me I really like the way they trivialize the bad aspects of regular life. Trump’s America may suck, but it’s a modest step above an America ruled by flesh-eating zombies. (I think?)
Great article. I am not a gamer but after reading this, I can see that gaming has added many layers to your The Last of Us experience. It makes it a more vibrant experience, no? I love the show and am looking forward to all the episodes.
I am also watching HIS DARK MATERIALS, which approaches death as a place and has some good characters. The time between seasons is much longer than I like, tho.
Is that one you’d highly recommend? You’re not the first I’ve heard mention it!
And absolutely. My time with the video games has really added a whole layer of depth to my viewing experience. It’s interesting how many people watching the show still aren’t even aware of those origins!
HIS DARK MATERIALS is definitely unique for me. One of the things I love about it is that the humans all have Spirit animals who stay with them consistently, and the humans know they are there, but often don't pay attention to them or look for them. The SA can also change form. Who is good and who is bad is not all that obvious in the main characters, which I also love. So if those things, in addition to finding your identity and some good versus evil stuff, appeal to you, I highly recommend it.
When I tuned into Season One, I tuned out the minute I saw zombies. Then one night, a few months later, I thought I'd give it another try. This time it stuck and I can't wait for all of Season Two to drop so I can binge it. Then again, it's hell trying to dodge the spoilers.

Thanks for reading, Charles!
