I was always curious to join one when I was younger (and still today would be curious how I’d do, truthfully). But if they had them locally as a kid, I don’t think they were school-sponsored or anything. I don’t remember ever hearing about them, at least!
My pleasure, Ben. It's been too many decades ago, so I don't remember any of the words, and have even forgotten the word I misspelled! I'm guessing that, like many other school activities and programs, spelling bees have sadly also become obsolete.
